The Region
The small riverside village of Maydena is the gateway to Tasmanian World Heritage wilderness , is surrounded by mountain peaks and is the home of the Maydena MTB Park. Maydena is also a great stop on the way to Lake Pedder, and Mount Field National Park is only a 10 minute drive away. Mount Field is the home to one of Australia's most beautiful waterfalls Russell Falls a tiered cascade waterfall and there is a lovely tall trees walk . Also near Maydena you can walk through some of the tallest trees in Australia at the Styx Big Tree Reserve.
Nearby there are numerous rainforest walks with towering swamp gums and one of the best trout fishing rivers the Tyenna river. Near the bridge at Maydena you can often spot platypus. Mount Field with its mountain scapes and trees also encompasses a cave system, glacial lakes and ancient turns and heath groves. The Junee caves and springs are in Maydena and well worth a visit as are Marriot falls just down the road towards Mount Field.
New Norfolk , is great to visit for its selection of antique shops ( willow court antiques, the nurses quarters and the Patch work cafe) The Drill Hall antiques, and the Flywheel artisan paper and print shop . It is also the home of The Agarian Kitchen and bookshop well worth a visit and probably one of the best restaurants in the Hobart region.
You should arrive with all your groceries for your stay since there is only one very small general store/ burger shop in Maydena that can supply bread and milk and some basics. One of the first houses on the left when entering Maydena does sell free range eggs and some seasonal vegies and of course stopping at the berry farms enroute is great but the nearest supermarket is in New Norfolk a 40 minute drive towards Hobart. There is The Maydena bike park cafe open at night and sometimes they have BBQ meal nights up at Eagles Eerie and shuttle you up the to dine at the summit, there is a bar there too but enquire about week night openings. There is a small RSL in Maydena and The National Park pub a 10 minute drive away serves meals beside the fire in a pleasant dining room.
